Taylor Townsend was unable to cover up eight games in the second set and ended with a 25-minute decisive match as she was eliminated at the U.S. Open 1-6, 7-6 (13), 6-3 loss to Barbora Krejcikikova at Sunday’s U.S. Open.
Fans are firmly behind a player who becomes a fan’s favorite during the game Her confrontation with Jelena Ostapenko, Townsend has been away from her first Grand Slam singles quarterfinals several times. But two-time Grand Slam singles champion Krejcikova removed a series of match points in the deciding game, breaking Townsend twice in the third set and facing another American on Tuesday, fourth seed Jessica Pegula.
Townsend hugged Krejcikova online, then sat on her sideline chair, started crying, then wiped his eyes with a towel and left the court to stand up and applaud.
“I totally like this group of people to be honest. Even for me, it’s good for Americans,” Kregikova said. “I look forward to meeting you again in the next game – I think against another American.”
Townsend never approached the final eight games in her first 31 Grand Slam appearance. She lost to ultimate champion Bianca Andreescu in other fourth rounds in 2019.
Townsend went on to compete in the Women’s Doubles Championship with Katerina Siniakova’s 1st seed, who won a career grand slam with Krejcikova during his collaboration.
Pegula hit her compatriot Ann Li 6-1, 6-2 in just 54 minutes. Pegula did not place a set on the grass in Flushing this year, only once she stayed in court for more than 75 minutes.
“Honestly, it was probably the best game, like before Wimbledon, I thought it was encouraging from beginning to end,” Pegula said. “I was just batting, doing well, executing my strategy and it would be done very quickly.”
