The agency, based in Bern, Switzerland, said “significant operational disruptions” occurred because airlines and other carriers said they were unwilling or able to levy such duties, and that foreign postal operators did not establish links to CBP qualified companies.
Before the measure came into effect, the Postal Union sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio to express concerns about its impact.
De Minimis’ exemption has been in some form since 1938, and the government said the loophole that foreign companies use to evade tariffs and use criminals to absorb drugs into the United States has become a loophole.
Purchasing now that have entered the United States without clearing customs is now subject to review and subject to applicable tariff rates in the country of origin, ranging from 10% to 50%.
