Trump administration rewrites and scales annual human rights report

The Trump administration has greatly rewritten and weakened the U.S. government’s annual report on global human rights violations.

The State Department documents were previously regarded as the most comprehensive study of such research by any government, greatly reducing criticism of some U.S. allies, such as Israel and El Salvador, while disapproving of disapproval of perceived enemies such as Brazil and South Africa.

The entire section included in previous years’ reports has also been eliminated, greatly reducing the coverage of issues such as government corruption and LGBTQ+ personal persecution.

The language echoes criticism from the Trump administration and some American tech bosses who oppose the reduction of online harm laws in some European countries, describing it as an attack on freedom of speech.

Uzra Zeya, a former senior State Department official who now runs the charity human rights first, accused the Trump administration of “burning” the highly respected work on decades of Human Rights Protection and “abandoning core values” to the United States.

“This sends a signal that the U.S. government will have free passes, which would be another way if the government is willing to cut the deal or conduct bids for this administration,” she told the BBC.

The report accused the UK of “significant human rights issues”including “reliable reports of serious restrictions on freedom of expression.” It will also prosecute and punish human rights violations that are “inconsistent”.
