U.S. judge ordered Donald Trump’s administration to resume part of the federal grant, which has recently been suspended for the University of California Los Angeles.
San Francisco’s U.S. District Court Judge Rita Lin ruled that grant funds were suspended in violation of a preliminary injunction in early June, and she ordered the National Science Foundation to restore dozens of grants that it had terminated at the university California.
The order prevented the institution from canceling other grants in the University of California system, which UCLA is part of.
“The NSF’s actions violated the preliminary ban,” wrote Lin, a former Democratic President Joe Biden. The White House and the University did not immediately comment on the ruling.
UCLA said last week that the government freezes $584 million in funding. Trump threatened to cut protests from pro-Palestinian students protests against Israeli military attacks on Gaza.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the judge’s order demanded the recovery of more than one-third of the $584 million in funds.
The University of California said last week it was reviewing Trump administration For UCLA, the university will pay $1 billion. It said the huge payment would “destroy” the agency.
The government accused universities, including UCLA, allowed anti-Semitism during the protests.
Protesters, including some Jewish groups, say the government has mistakenly equated their criticism of Israel’s war in Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territory with anti-Semitism, as well as their right to advocate Palestinian rights and support extremism.
Experts raised concerns about free speech and academic freedom over the threat of the Republican president. Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom said the Trump administration’s reconciliation offers a form of ransomware.
A large demonstration was held at UCLA last year. Last month, UCLA agreed to pay more than $6 million in fees to resolve lawsuits alleging anti-Semitism. This year, it was also prosecuted in a violent attack on pro-Palestinian protesters in 2024.
Rights advocates point to the increase in anti-Semitism, anti-Arab bias and Islamophobia due to conflicts in the Middle East. The Trump administration has not announced an equal investigation into Islamophobia.
The government has investigated Columbia University and Columbia University and Brown University, which agreed to pay more than $220 million, which said it would pay $50 million. Both accepted certain government requests. Reconciliation negotiations with Harvard University are underway.
