AMRITSAR: Punjab: Navjot Singh Sidhu resigns; now back to showbiz or commentary – Even as Navjot Singh Sidhu had refused to quit unless with the losing state Congress presidents of Goa, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Manipur, he submitted his one-line resignation to Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday and now rumours abound that he might return to showbiz or cricket commentary.

Ego clash with the state Congress colleagues and his desire to run the show in a personalised manner with his own deputies and favourite bureaucrats caused discontentment in the unit. His nine months as state Congress president were wasted first in dethroning Captain Amarinder Singh as chief minister and then playing a game of one-upmanship with his replacement, Charanjit Singh Channi, followed by projecting himself as Mr Fixit while continuing to deny it before the media.

The 2022 assembly elections shrunk the Congress to 18 seats in the 117-member House from 77 put on the scoreboard in 2017. The only solace was finishing second behind the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Losing his own Amritsar East seat to political novice Jeevan Jyot Kaur depreciated Sidhu’s celebrity value in the high command’s eyes. Launched in 2004 when the BJP made him run for the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat after completing a commentary assignment in Pakistan, Sidhu’s political career has entered another bad phase.

For the humiliating defeat, Khadur Sahib Congress MP Jasbir Singh Gill blamed the “inflated egos and arrogance of the party leaders”, while former cabinet minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa held Sidhu responsible for the “disunity and indiscipline” to which even Dera Baba Nanak MLA and former deputy chief minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa had indicated.

Political analyst Manohar Lal Sharma, who has been adviser to former CM Harcharan Singh Brar, said: “Left with no bright future in politics, Sidhu might go back to show business or restart cricket commentary. The Congress may not want to adjust him in a significant position, while the other parties are also not in a position to adopt him at this stage.”

Claiming that the Congress and the SAD-BSP combined failed to understand the nerves of their workers, Sharma said: “It is not correct to say that the Congress lost due to Sidhu. It lost Punjab because its workers marooned the party, and they were disenchanted because some leaders had brought in their relatives or children as successors.”
