Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday hit out at the Opposition’s INDIA alliance over   DML leader Udhyanidhi Stalin’s remark on “Sanatan Dharma”.

Udhayanidhi, the Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs in Tamil Nadu and son of CM M K Stalin, had said: “We can’t oppose dengue, mosquitoes, malaria or corona, we have to eradicate them. In the same way, we have to eradicate Sanatana (Sanatan Dharma), rather than opposing it.”

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Sunday hit out at the Opposition’s INDIA alliance over   DML leader Udhyanidhi Stalin’s remark on “Sanatan Dharma”. The BJP has accused him of calling for the eradication of Sanatan Dharma, the teachings of Hinduism, and equating it with diseases like “dengue, malaria and Covid-19,” at a press conference in Chennai on Saturday.

“I have been observing the INDIA alliance for the past two days. You [Opposition alliance] want power? But at what cost? For the past two days, you have been insulting this country’s tradition, this country’s history, Sanatan Dharm,” Shah said while addressing a gathering during the launch of ‘Parivartan Yatra’ from Dungarpur in Rajasthan.

“The two main parties of the INDIA coalition, Congress and DMK — the son of a finance minister and son of a chief minister — have been saying that Sanatan Dharma should be eradicated,” Shah continued.

“To do appeasement and vote-bank politics, these people have insulted the Sanatan Dharma,” Shah added.

Continuing to take a jibe at the Opposition-led alliance, Shah said, “Today, the UPA government and Congress leaders say that if Modi wins, the rule of Dharma shall prevail. Sanatan Dharma rules the heart of the people, no one can remove it.”

A day after the comments sparked a row, Udhayanidhi denied that he called for any “genocide”, as alleged by BJP leader Amit Malviya, and stood by his claim that Sanatan “divides people in the name of caste and religion” and needed to be “uprooted”.

“Let me reiterate the crucial aspect of my speech: I believe, like the spread of diseases like Covid-19, Dengue, and Malaria by mosquitoes, that Sanatan Dharma is responsible for many social evils,” he wrote.

Earlier in the day, Bhartiya Janata Party’s ’s (BJP) IT cell chief Amit Malviya slammed Udhayanidhi for his remarks, saying that the minister was calling for “genocide of 80% population of Bharat, who follow Sanatan Dharma.”

DMK Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Saravanan Annadurai, however, said that the former’s statement has been “twisted” and “taken out of context.”
