Mallikarjun Kharge statement comes in the backdrop of the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs releasing the fourth list of standardised geographical names in Zangnan, the Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as part of south Tibet, state-run Global Times had reported on Sunday.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi asking whether the PM is sleeping after taking opium and hence not paying attention to Chinese intrusions.

Addressing a rally for party candidate Udailal Anjana in Rajasthan’s Chittorgarh, Kharge said Modi does not think of the country and is busy abusing the Gandhi family whose members sacrificed their lives for the nation.

Kharge said, “Modi ji 56-inch ki chhati hai meri, main nahi darunga. Arey bhai aap nahi darte hain phir China ko humara bahut sa bhaag kyun chhorey? Who andar ghus ke aa rahe hain. Aap kya neend kar rahe ho? Kya neend ki goli khaaye ho? Kya Rajasthan ke kheton mein se afeem le jaake … ya woh khilaay hain kya? (Modi ji says he has 56-inch chest, that he won’t get scared. But if you’re not scared then why did you leave so much of our territory for China? They are coming inside. Are you sleeping? Are you taking sleeping pills? Or did you take opium from Rajasthan fields… or have they fed you).”

Kharge’s statement comes in the backdrop of the Chinese Ministry of Civil Affairs releasing the fourth list of standardised geographical names in Zangnan, the Chinese name for Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing claims as part of south Tibet, state-run Global Times had reported on Sunday.

And a day after The Indian Express reported that 25 Opposition leaders facing corruption probe crossed over to the BJP– and that 23 of them got reprieve – Kharge said that the PM keeps talking of removing corruption but at the same time, “after leveling corruption allegations against Congress, TMC, AAP and NCP leaders, they took in 25 such leaders.”

On the issue of notices from the Income Tax, he said “Modi stole the donations given to Congress by the common man. Rs 135 crore was withdrawn from our account as penalty. A penalty of Rs 3,567 crore was imposed on Congress. But they don’t give an account of the money they collected,” adding that a penalty on BJP, if imposed, would be over Rs 4,600 crore.

Accusing the PM of impropriety, Kharge said, “Twenty days ago, Modi made his first election speech in Kalaburagi, which is fine. But do your election campaign with your own money, and the donations you collected. But if you roam around with government funds and facilities, then the nation will not benefit,” he said.

“How many of your people, your leaders, of RSS and BJP, died for independence? How many were hanged to death by the noose? Tell us, hisaab do. Our people were hanged by the noose, they died, they took out rallies, faced lathis, lakhs left their homes and fought for country’s independence – they were Congress party people,” he said.

He said that the forefathers of those in the BJP and RSS “were with the Britishers. When Gandhi ji was fighting, you were celebrating and chasing government jobs.”

He said that Congress and its leaders gave the nation its independence, democracy and the Constitution which enabled Modi to sit on PM’s chair but now he wants to crush the same system.

Stating that it was Congress which got India its independence and it was Jawaharlal Nehru, Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar and others who laid the foundation for democracy and gave the Constitution, “due to which you have become the PM nahi toh raste pe phirte (else you would have been roaming in the streets) Kharge said, “Now you are trying to crush the same independence, democracy and Constitution due to which you rose and got respect.”

He said that Modi attacks parivaarvad (nepotism) but no one from the Gandhi family has been a Prime Minister or held a ministerial post since 1989 (after Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in 1991) and that members of the Gandhi family have laid down their lives for the unity of the nation.

In Chittorgarh, Anjana faces sitting MP and BJP state president C P Joshi.
