U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the White House will hold a UFC round next year to commemorate the 250-year U.S. independence.
A group of people in Iowa told the crowd Thursday that the event would be a “champion.”
“We’re going to have some incredible events, some professional events, some amateur events, some amateur events,” the president, a friend of UFC President Dana White.
Trump attended several UFC events last month, including UFC 316 in Newark, New Jersey, where he was photographed watching the battle with White.
Trump spoke to the crowd as he appeared at the Iowa State University exhibition in Des Moines: “Is anyone watching the UFC?
After Trump announced the news, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the plan on X, writing: “It will be epic!”
Trump’s link to the UFC dates back over 20 years. In 2001, he held a UFC fight at the Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City while he was struggling to find a location.
White supported the president’s political career from the outset and recognized his presidential bid in 2016, calling Trump a “fighter.”
After the assassination attempt on Trump last year failed, White described Trump as “strong man” and “legitimate, ultimate, American bad guy ever.”
Trump believes that the UFC event will be one of many events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the U.S. independence on July 4 next year.
“Every of our national parks, battlefields and historic sites will host special events to mark the United States 250,” he said.
