Justice Department officials discuss potential gun restrictions for trans people

Ministry of Justice Fox News Digital learned that officials had several internal meetings about restrictions on the ability of trans people to buy guns.

According to dialogue with multiple sources, the conversation between Justice Department officials is in the early stages and no specific steps are taken.

But discussions surrounding two intense issues of Republicans—preserving Second Amendment rights and tightening policies related to trans people—are taking place.

A source noted that the “patterns” of shootings carried out by trans people, including the recent tragedy in the Catholic Church in Minnesota. Another source said the Justice Department’s discussion on prohibiting transgender people from buying or owning firearms involves the office of legal counsel, which provides legal advice to the administration. Sources show that Justice Department officials are currently thinking through a viable legal framework. Such discussions may be roped in the bureau of alcohol, tobacco, guns and explosives (ATF), which is part of the Justice Department and has power over federal rules related to guns.

When asked about the negotiations, a spokesman for Justice Department downplayed the discussions for trans people, telling Fox News that the department has been studying many options to address the correlation between shootings and mental health, but has not proposed any specific options.

“The Department of Justice is actively evaluating options to prevent the patterns of violence we see from people with specific mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders,” the spokesperson said. “No specific criminal justice recommendations have been made yet.”

One of the sources said Justice Department officials “are reviewing methods to ensure that psychopaths with gender irritability cannot access guns when they are instability and discomfort.”

People with mental health conditions usually do not buy guns in accordance with current laws. Supreme Court Reiterated in the 2024 U.S. v. Rahimi.

But in some cases, such as a court that believes someone is mentally incompetent, the information should appear in a background check and prevent the client from obtaining a gun license.

Gun rights advocates quickly responded to the Justice Department’s efforts to find ways to restrict trans people from buying or owning guns.

The Gun Policy Alliance threatens to prosecute if the Justice Department dialogue incorporates specific policy recommendations.

“If the Trump administration (or any administration) unwisely chooses government force that conflicts with the Constitution, federal law or our values, the FPC will take positive action to defend the rights of peaceful people, like many times before us,” the organization said in a statement.

The Gun Policy Alliance says the task is to “eliminate the constitutionally protected weapons ban, publicly, individually made weapons and non-hazardous legal adults.”

The Justice Department’s action coincides with a series of executive actions by Trump, which aims to change policies regarding transgender people. The president said in his order that there are only two genders, male and female. Gender irritable people cannot serve in the military; and students will violate Title IX If they participate in sports competition, make their opposite sex unique.

Fox News reached out to the White House to comment on the Justice Department’s floating idea that transgender people are prohibited from buying guns.
