Trump’s low-key talk about the Nobel Peace Prize

After weeks of speculation, U.S. President Donald Trump has downplayed his suggestion to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

“I have nothing to say,” Trump told CBS News. “All I can do is start a war.” The president added: “I don’t seek attention. I just want to save lives.”

The comments seem to be inconsistent with previous statements about the matter, when he said he should receive prestigious honors for his termination of several conflicts.

In the same telephone interview, Trump told the media that he was committed to helping ensure a peaceful agreement between Russia and Ukraine. “Something will happen. We’ll get it done,” he said.

Trump is expected to speak over the phone to the pro-Ukrainian European leader who met in Paris on Thursday. His envoy, Steve Witkoff, attended in person.

The Nobel Committee of Nobel will announce the Nobel Peace Prize winners on October 10. Four former U.S. presidents, including Trump’s political rival Barack Obama, were awarded the honor.

In February, Trump lamented: “They will never give me the Nobel Peace Prize. I deserve it, but they will never give it to me.”

His press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, stepped up the message in July, saying Trump won the award, which was “time in the past.”

The rest of his top team added crescendo. At a cabinet meeting last week, his envoy, Steve Witkoff, called him the “best” Nobel candidate in history for his “game-changing” work.

Five members of the Nobel Panel were appointed by the Norwegian Parliament. Trump has reportedly discussed his hopes for his bonus with Norwegian Finance Minister Jens Stoltenberg – although Stoltenberg has not confirmed that yet.

The U.S. president has been nominated by several countries, including Israel and Pakistan. Trump has been honored for pressures between Pakistan and neighboring India earlier this year.

That was one of six to seven wars that Trump used to say he “ends”.

The claim reviewed analysts, who said some of the conflicts lasted for several days, although it was the result of long-standing tensions. It is unclear whether some peace agreements will last.

The BBC verification explores Trump’s role in cooling down seven conflicts – including the conflict between Israel and Iran and others.
