Former Minnesota State Legislative Councilor Melissa Hortman Her legislative achievements and human honor at the funeral held on Saturday Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
The former president and vice president joined more than 1,000 other mourners.
Hortman was shot dead by a man who pretended to be a policeman in an attack two weeks ago. Minnesota’s chief federal prosecutor said the killing and assassination. The shooting also killed her husband, Mark, and severely injured a state senator and his wife.
Minnesota Governor, “Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most important spokesperson in Minnesota history. I remember her as a close friend, mentor and the most talented legislator I’ve ever known,” Minnesota Governor, Tim Walzsaid in his eulogy.
WalzHarris’s campaign partner in the 2024 White House elections won by Donald Trump, added: “I have had the honor of signing her agenda for seven years.
Neither Biden nor Harris spoke, but they sat in the front row with Waltz. Biden was also one of more than 7,500 people on Friday with the homage of Hortman, her husband and their Golden Hound Gilbert Instant Rotunda of Minnesota Capitol Building in St. Paul. Gilbert was seriously injured in the attack and had to be euthanized. Biden also visited an injured senator from a hospital.
Dozens of current and former state legislators from both sides and other elected officials working with Hotman were also present.
As House Speaker, Hortman helped adopt a broad freedom initiative agenda, such as free lunch for public school students, and strengthening protections for abortion and trans rights at a major legislative session in 2023. As the House split 67-67 between Democrats and Republicans this year, she handed the gavel to Republicans, seized championship spokesman Emerita, and helped break the budget deadlock that threatened to shut down the state government under the power sharing agreement.
Hortman was first elected in 2004 – her mission is to “do the good job for as many people as possible.” He said that her focus on people is so effective.
“She certainly knows how to go her own way – no doubt,” Walz said. “But she never made anyone feel like she was rolling on the negotiating table. It wasn’t part of it for her, nor was it part of her. She didn’t need anyone else to win her.”
The governor said the best way to follow their example and respect the Hotmans is.
“Maybe at this moment, each of us can study the way we work together, the way we talk to each other, the way we fight for things we care about,” Walz said. “When each of us can participate in politics and life in the way Mark and Melissa – passionate, passionate, heartfelt, without invisibility to our common humanity.”
The Hotmans’ private funeral will be held later.
Hortman is proud of their adult children, Sophie and Colin Hortman, whom lawmakers often talk about.
Colin said in an emotional voice that his parents embodies the “Golden Rule” and he reads the prayer of St. Francis, which his mother keeps in his purse. He said it grasped her essence. It begins: “Lord, let me be the instrument of your peace.”
After serving, Waltz presented children to us and Minnesota flags that flew past the state capitol the day their parents were killed.
The man was accused of killing the Hotman at his home in Brooklyn Park in suburbs of Minneapolis and injured Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife Yvette on the evening of June 15 at his home near his home.
Vance Boelter of Green Island, 57, is still in jail and has not filed a charge of possible federal death sentences.
