Chicago mayor says Trump National Guard plan violates constitution

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson calls the president on Sunday Donald Trump’s The plan to send the National Guard to Chicago is “blatantly violating our constitution.”

“What the president proposes is the most blatant violation of our constitution. The city of Chicago does not require military occupation,” Johnson wrote on X.

Johnson also shared clips of his appearance on MSNBC’s “Weekend.”

“But this is clearly an infringement of the Constitution and we will remain firm and vigilant to ensure that our democracy is protected and that our humanity is protected,” Johnson added.

Trump said Friday that Chicago will continue to conduct federal intervention after efforts in Washington, D.C.

Shortly after Trump announced the news, Johnson said Chicago had not received formal notices about law enforcement or military deployment and expressed “serious concerns” about any illegal actions.

He called the administration’s efforts “incongruous, meaningless and imperfect” and he stepped back after Trump marked him as “very incompetent” earlier in the day.

He noted that homicides fell by 30%, robberies fell by 35%, and shootings in the past year have dropped by nearly 40%, believing federal operations will erode trust.

Johnson released a statement Sunday saying he and his team are communicating with their peers at the county and state levels as Chicago prepares for any possible military deployment to the city.

“Governor, the chairman of the Cook County Board of Trustees, and I are totally aligned: Chicago does not call for a military occupation of our city. We are currently evaluating all our legal options to protect the Chicago people from unconstitutional federal excesses,” Johnson said. “Whatever happens, the city of Chicago will not waver. We are Chicago. We are not bent over or cringe, and we will never break.”

The White House advises that blue city leaders like Chicago focus on their own issues rather than criticizing the president for trying to make America great.

White House spokesman Abigail Jackson told Fox News numbers that if Democrats spend half of their time solving their city crimes, they do criticize the president for wanting to make America safe again, their voters will be much better. ”

But 2023 data shows that several cities in Illinois (including Chicago Heights, Danville, Peoria, Rockford and Harvey) have much higher violent crime rates.
