Apparent accident at a dairy farm in a rural agricultural community Colorado Authorities said Thursday that six people involved in gas were killed, including a high school student.
Investigators are studying which gas may be in the death of Prospect Valley Dairy on Wednesday Keanesburgabout 35 miles (55 kilometers) northeast of Denver. The Southeast Welding Fire Zone said the crew recovered the body in a narrow space of dairy products.
“We are investigating these deaths, which are possible consequences of gas exposure,” said Jolene Weiner, chief deputy coroner of Weld County.
Weiner said the identity of all Hispanic men who died were awaiting notification of their families. A local school district said a high school student was the one who died.
Melissa Chesmore, a spokesman for the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, said her agent did not find anything that indicated the crime had occurred.
“It looked like an accident,” she said, refusing to elaborate on or state where the body was, referring the issue to the occupational safety regulator.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating, U.S. Department of Labor spokesman Chauntra Rideaux said in an email. The farm is a member of American dairy farmers, the organization said.
“We are very sad about this incident and our thoughts and most sincere condolences pay tribute to the friends and family of the deceased. At this early stage, we have no more details.”
The property is owned by Prospect Valley Dairy LLC and lists the owner address of Bakersfield, California, according to the county tax record. The phone message left at the California address was not immediately returned.
Weld County is the main agricultural producer. Three-quarters of its land is dedicated to farming and raising livestock. This is Colorado’s leading dairy producer and the largest source of beef cattle, cereals and beets in the state.
Data from the 2020 census show that 30% of the county are Hispanic or Latino, while the state is overall 22%.
