R-Wisc. Rep. Derrick Van Orden described the scene of a horrible highway crash that prompted him and other bystanders to help save an 11-year-old child this weekend.
Van Orden Tell the Washington inspector that he and his family were traveling in Iowa when he saw the crash in the rearview mirror.
“I’m watching a Dodge big minivan collapse. It seems to drift from the road at 70 mph, more on the passenger side of the car. My wife Sarah is like, what’s going on? I looked at it and I said, someone is dead,” He told the media.
Former Navy SEAL Van Orden said he quickly rushed the car back to the scene.

“I ran to the passenger side and all the injuries were hit, and there was an 11-year-old. I looked at him, his calves (as big as my thighs, were completely torn, so I could see his shin and fibula, his fibula was big, just he was bleeding.

“By then, about 10 people have stopped to help as well. I thought, ‘Does anyone have a knife?’ They are like, “Yes.” “So I cut off the seat belt and made the tourniquet,” he added.

“Some big old Iowa farm dude, probably in his 60s, ripped his arm off the windshield wiper and another lady said she was a doctor. She ended up grabbing a piece of metal, made a tourniquet on his leg, and we all packed him up, put him away and took him to the ambulance,” he continued.
Van Orden said: “It took about 10 to 15 minutes. He would bleed. The nursing staff is Respond quickly, but still miles away. “He will leave.”
Van Orden told the media that he visited the young man at the hospital on Monday but he did not name the boy.

There were no reports of deaths in the crash, but both the boy and the van’s driver were airlifted to a nearby hospital.
