Democrats who fled Texas to slow Republicans’ plans to revote the map said they were back in the state capital to “win.”

after Weeks of confrontationOn Monday, lawmakers said they now “a plan for Republicans is more dangerous than when we left” and they will “build the legal record necessary to defeat this racist map in court.”

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has held another session and lawmakers are expected to approve plans to strengthen the Republican majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 election.

But states led by Democrats are now working to redo the map in a bid to offset those gains and potentially take the majority.

Abbott once said that in “fighting and hiding,” Democrats have also escaped votes on other issues important to Texas, such as relief funds for areas that were damaged by fatal floods earlier this summer.

“Texans deserve to be leaders who show up, not leaders who give up their duties,” he said.

Gene Wu, chairman of the Texas House Democratic Caucus, said he maintained his duty to lead Democrats out of the state. This breaks the need for lawmakers to vote on Republican plans.

The chances of them stopping these plans altogether are always low, but Democrats say they will return to the Republican majority if two conditions are met: end the special session and raise awareness of the rezoning plan.

“We killed the special session of corruption, endured unprecedented surveillance and intimidation, and gathered Democrats across the country to participate in this existing battle for fair representation – reshaping the landscape throughout 2026,” Wu said in a statement.

He also said his party is ready to be in the next stage of fighting it Grimand – Redefine the electoral boundaries to favor political parties.

Democrats believe that the new Texas map violates the 1965 Voting Rights Act and aims to prevent racial discrimination in voting and the U.S. Constitution. They said they are preparing to prove that the Texas map violates federal law and should be overturned. They believe the Republican map eliminates decades of hard work by black and Latino voters.

Each member of a U.S. housing represents a region in its state. These areas are usually set after the U.S. census is conducted every decade to explain the population changes in states. But Republicans and Democrats are now working to repaint the mid-decade map to help or block President Donald Trump’s agenda.

California, New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Maryland are Democratic-led states ready to launch the Texas program countermeasures.

Last Thursday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said he would ask voters in his state to approve new maps before the midterm elections in late 2026

In California, the voting map is usually drawn by an independent committee, but Newsom’s plan is expected to offer at least five additional seats to Democrats, eliminating the five seats Abbott and Trump hope to receive in Texas.
