Three Republican-led states send National Guard to the District of Columbia

Three Republican-led states will send members of the National Guard to Washington, D.C. to strengthen the troops. President Donald Trump has deployed to the city.

West Virginia Governor Parick Morrisey said he would send 300-400 National Guard troops at Trump’s request. South Carolina will send 200 soldiers and Ohio will send 150 military police from the National Guard, their governor said.

But Mayor Muriel Bowser rejected Trump’s claims about rampant crimes in the city. She admitted that the surge in crime in 2023.

Homicides fell 32% between 2023 and 2024 and reached their lowest level since 2019, according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

According to MPD data, preliminary data show that violent crime has generally dropped by 26% so far, compared to the same point in 2024. The robbery dropped by 28%, BBC Verification Report.

The Trump administration initially tried to use the District of Columbia Family Rule Act, But the order was canceled after city officials took them to court.

But, Judge Anna Reyes said Mayor Bowser must follow White House orders.
