The high-stakes meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Russian President Vladimir Putin is called a crucial step towards a peace in Ukraine.
However, due to the absence of a ceasefire and an invitation from Moscow, the almost three-hour meeting between the two leaders generated more questions than answers.
These are the five main gains from the Alaska Summit.
Putin welcomes the world stage with the red carpet
Alaska’s skies were cloudy when President Vladimir Putin descended back to the world stage on Friday. Waiting for the red carpet to spread on the apron of the joint base Elmendorf-Richardson, it is U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trump patted when Putin approached. The two leaders shook hands enthusiastically and smiled.
It was an amazing moment for Putin.
The fact that the Alaska summit happened was Putin’s victory. But this welcome will surpass the Kremlin’s craziest dream. In just six months, Putin went from being a pariah in the eyes of the West to being welcomed by American soil like a partner and friend.
To tie it up, in a time when clearly without script, Putin decided to accept the elevator of the Trump armored limousine’s air force base instead of riding his own Moscow-plated Presidential State car.
As the vehicle was pulled away, the camera enlarged Putin and sat in the back seat and smiled.

Putin faces questions he has never been asked
Putin has completely controlled the media during his 25 years as Russian president, undermining press freedom and replacing information with propaganda. In Russia, he is not often (if any) encountered with unfriendly journalists.
However, just minutes after landing in Alaska, a reporter shouted in his direction: “Will you stop killing civilians?” If the question haunts him, he did not show it, but instead shrugged and diverted his eyes.
In a short and somewhat confusing photo OP, shouting loudly, including Russians about whether Putin is ready to meet with Volodymyr Zelensky’s president for a triangular summit. Similarly, the Russian president has no obvious reaction except for a mysterious smirk.
What to say when the conversation ends with expectations
The world media gathered in the room with Putin and Trump were brought to the press conference. Instead, the two leaders made statements without raising any questions about the reporter.
Unusually, Putin was the first to speak. He praised the “constructive atmosphere of mutual respect” of the “neighbor” conversation and then initiated the coagulation history of Alaska’s past as Russian territory.
As Putin said, Trump was silent. The Russian president mentioned what he called the “situation in Ukraine” for a few minutes – ostensibly the catalyst for the summit. When he does this, it is important to point out that although an unspecified “agreed” has been reached, the “root cause” of the conflict must be eliminated before peace can be achieved.
The phrase will cause alarm in Kyiv and beyond. It has become a shorthand for a series of tricky and biggest demands since the war began, which Putin said were hampering the ceasefire.
These include recognition of Russia’s Russian sovereignty over Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Hessen, and Ukraine’s agreement to non-military, neutral, without foreign military participation and new elections. In essence, they equal surrender-Kiev is unacceptable, but obviously after three and a half years of bloody conflict, it remains crucial to Moscow.
In this way, it is obvious that there are no transactions.

Instead of saying anything
Given the context and premise of the summit – when Trump was speaking, he did not mention the possibility of a ceasefire in Ukraine or once. The closest he came to mentioning the conflict was that “every Friday, Saturday, and seven thousand people” were killed, noting that Putin also wanted to see the end of the bloodshed.
Usually, Trump seems to speak less than Putin. His statement is known for his relatives and unusual simplicity, but mainly because of its ambiguity. “We reached a lot of perspectives,” Trump said, adding that “great progress” was made in a “extremely productive conference.”
But he did not share any details and did not seem to take any specific steps to resolve the Ukrainian conflict. No major agreement or trilateral meeting was announced with President Zelensky.
And – Relief of Moscow – does not mention any “serious consequences” that Trump threatens to follow if the ceasefire is not reached.
“We didn’t get there,” Trump admitted.
Then, he said vaguely, “But we have a great chance to get there.”
“Next time in Moscow” – Putin is rare in English
The summit may not have made any tangible progress in Ukraine’s peace, but it consolidated the reconciliation between Russia and the United States.
Photos of the two presidents repeatedly shook hands and grinned on social media – like images of American soldiers kneeling as they took off the red carpet under the feet of Putin’s plane.
Before summarizing his statement, Putin mentioned the point that the U.S. president often talked about – if Trump is in power, the conflict in Ukraine will never begin.
Despite Trump’s advocacy for “huge progress”, there was nothing substantial at the Alaska summit – but the two leaders opened their doors to attend another meeting, this time on Russian land. “I may see you again soon,” Trump said.
In a joint statement, he had to make no commitments, no concessions, no compromises, and no compromises, and Putin might feel relaxed enough to break into English – a rare thing. He smiled and looked at Trump and said, “Next time in Moscow.”
“Oh, this is a funny guy,” Trump said. “I’ll give that little heat, but I-I can see it might have happened.”
