More than 200 House and Senate Democrats A letter was signed denouncing what they called “an unprecedented event” in which Senator Alexander Padilla (D-Calif.) was forcibly taken from one Homeland Security Last week’s press conference.
The letter, signed by 188 members of Congress and 35 senators, accused the Trump administration of “potential power violations” and said the incident “has raised shocking questions about the actions of federal law enforcement agencies, coordination of protection services and the administration’s posture toward congressional oversight.”
Padilla was handcuffed and briefly detained by an officer Trump administration Immigration raids sparked unrest in Los Angeles, with less protests across the country this month.
Video of the incident shows Padilla trying to walk to Noem while speaking on the podium and trying to yell at the secretary, but law enforcement officers stepped in and forcibly stopped Padilla’s progress.

The video shows Padilla eventually was taken out of the room, taken to the ground and handcuffed. Fox News reporters who attended the press conference said Padilla appeared to have been detained for some time.
“I’m not trying to remain disrespectful or disruptive, I don’t think I am” and “I’m just asking a question, just like members of the press ask questions, members of Congress, members of the Senate ask questions, and ask us to work to keep the government accountable.”
The letter was sent by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and sent to the House Speaker along with hundreds of other members Mike JohnsonR-La. and Senate Majority Leader John ThuneRs.d. ,Monday.

In a press conference, Senator Alex Padilla was seen near the podium in Noem.
“We are writing to express our deep concern about the shocking and disturbing abuse of U.S. Senator Alex Padilla,” the lawmaker said in the letter.
“Senator Padilla clearly identifies himself and acts within his rights as a member of Congress,” the letter states. “This unprecedented incident is more than an offense to the security program, it is a constitutional issue – these actions may constitute an attack on the current senator.”
Democrats call on congressional leaders to “act quickly and decisively” to safeguard the dignity and authority of Congress.
“If members of the U.S. Senate can physically limit the search for answers from executive officials, it sets a dangerous precedent for the independence of the legislative branch,” the letter said.

Johnson once said his view on Padilla’s behavior before the incident was “very inappropriate”, telling reporters: “You do not charge the current cabinet secretary, and everyone can draw their own conclusions.”

“Padilla hit the podium at Secretary Noem in the middle of a press conference, resisting law enforcement, and did not immediately confirm herself,” she said. “The Democrats are so eager to talk about anything other than supporters of the fierce riot in Los Angeles that they are trying to get the martyr from the senator who loses his temper like a kindergarten.”
