Wasinger did not answer BuzzFeed News’ questions about potential genital checkups, but said in a statement: “Sports are done for every athlete who participates in school sports. Every child in Kansas must provide a birth certificate in order to attend school in Kansas. Both should be enough for any student.”
Although supporters of the bill claim that such legislation would help promote fair competition between sectarian women and girls, actual figures suggest that trans women athletes are a very small number. According to the Kansas State High School Activities Association, only three trans girls currently compete in sports at the high school level.
On Tuesday, Kansas passed another bill SB 180which will allow people of all ages to move in public places, including transgender people who prohibit the use of public restrooms and locker rooms and prohibit the change of their names and gender marks on their driver’s licenses.
The bill calls it the “Women’s Rights Act”, defining sex in binary terms as “male or female at birth” and says that this will lead to legal removals for trans, gender-non-uniform and bisexuals.
Republicans in the state have more than two-thirds of the majority to overturn Kelly’s veto.
Kansas’s Cleanup Act is the latest in many anti-establishment trans bills that wrap multiple restrictions or have a broad definition of where they can be enforced.
Last week, the Republican-controlled legislature in Kentucky also vetoed the Democratic governor’s veto as “Comprehensive Counter-Trade Act“Gender care for transgender youth is prohibited, they are forbidden from being unable to align with gender identity, and gives school officials the right to refuse to use student pronouns.
The Kansas sports ban will come into effect July 1 unless it is blocked by a judge.
