Flash torrents and heavy rains will cost at least three lives Tennessee Wednesday, as the county magistrate declared a state of emergency and caused serious damage on the roads around Chattanooga.
Authorities in the area said a tree was uprooted from saturated ground and fell on their car early Wednesday morning in East Ridge, a suburb of Chattanooga, killing a child and two adults.
Nearly seven inches of rain fell in the Hamilton County area Tuesday night, closing the interstate and prompting county mayor Weston Wamp to announce the state of emergency remains in effect Wednesday morning.
A man also disappeared after emergency officials saw him being swept away by floods in the Chattanooga area Tuesday night but was unable to reach him despite searching for him on a rescue ship.

After the flash floods, people were trapped in cars and houses overnight.
Fire department responders rescued several people from vehicles that flooded the road.
“Firefighters spent hours checking for sunken cars for anyone trapped. This is a lot of coordinated response efforts by city, county and state agencies as flash floods create dangerous situations in Chattanooga,” the fire department said. NBC Report.
As the waters rose, sheriff’s deputies rescued some residents trapped in the East Ridge area to help people sail into the inflatable rescue ship.
