Venus Williams will return to the Grand Slam singles after the U.S. Open after two years of absence and received a wildcard invitation on Wednesday, competing at Flushing Meadows at 45.
According to international, Williams will be the oldest singles contestant in the game tennis federal.
The seven-time main singles champion – including the 2000 and 2001 U.S. Open – has provided wildcards for the mixed doubles matches in New York next week. Singles matches start on August 24.
Williams last played in the 2023 U.S. Open Grand Slam event and lost in the first round. She hasn’t won a singles match since 2019. She returns to the tour Last month at DC Openher first game at any time in 16 months. When asked if this would have a one-off look, Williams replied: “I’m here now, who knows? Maybe there’s more…I’ll definitely play well. I’m still the same player. I’m a big hitter. It’s my brand.”
After surgery last year, she returned to fibroids to eliminate uterine fibroids, and she spent most of her time throughout the season. In Washington, she became the oldest woman to win a tour singles match since Martina Navratilova in 2004. She also caused headlines for announcing her engagement with the Italian actor and joked that she needed to return to her health insurance in court.
Williams also won 14 women’s doubles titles with sister Serena, and two mixed doubles titles, entering Cincinnati last week with a wildcard, but Lost in the first round singles. In New York, she will play doubles with American Reilly Opelka.
Other women’s singles wildcards are also given to Americans Clevie Ngounoue, Julieta Pareja, Caty McNally, Valerie Glozman and Alyssa Ahn; France’s Caroline Garcia will retire after the game; and Australia’s Talia Gibson.
The men’s wildcards are American Brandon Holt, Nishesh Basavardy, Tristan Boyer, Emilio Nava, Stefan Dostanic and Darwin Blanch; France’s Valentin Royer; and Australia’s Tristan chillkate.
