People attacking CDC headquarters Atlanta More than 180 shots were fired on campus on Friday, breaking about 150 windows, bullets pierced the “explosion-resistant” windows and spreading the glass shards, according to information inside the agency.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it can take weeks or even months to replace windows and clean up the losses.

A Georgia man blamed the 199 vaccine for frustrating and suicide, opened fire late Friday, killing a police officer. No one was injured on the CDC.

A law enforcement official told the Associated Press that the shooter was stopped by CDC security personnel, then drove to a nearby pharmacy and opened fire on Friday afternoon. The official was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly and spoke on anonymous condition. The 30-year-old man, Patrick Joseph White, later died, but authorities did not say whether he was killed by police or committed suicide.

U.S. Secretary of Health Robert F Kennedy Jr traveled to Atlanta to meet with Susan Monarez, the agency’s director, on Monday.

Monarez posted a statement on social media on Friday night saying at least four CDC buildings were attacked in the attack.

The extent of damage became even more obvious at the CDC leadership meeting over the weekend. Two CDC employees were told the discussions at the meeting described details to the Associated Press without anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose information. The details are also in the proxy memo seen by the AP reporter.

Building 21, which owns Monarez’s office, was hit with the most bullets. CDC officials did not say whether her office was hit.

CDC employees are advised to work from home this week.

Kennedy issued a statement Saturday saying “no one should not face violence when protecting the health of others”, while federal health officials “actively support CDC employees.”

He did not speak to the media during his visit on Monday.

Stephan Monroe, a retired CDC official, said he was concerned about the long-term impact of the attack on young scientists’ willingness to work for the government.

“I’m worried it will be a generational blow,” said Monroe, a reporter around the corner, said posters were set up in memory of the murdered officer David Ross.

Kennedy was the leader of the national anti-vaccine campaign before Donald Trump chose him to oversee federal health agencies and made false and misleading statements about the safety and effectiveness of Covid-19 shooting and other vaccines.

Tim Young, a CDC employee who retired in April, said years of false remarks about vaccines and public health are bound to “damage people’s mental health” and “cause violence.”

During President Trump’s first administration, Dr. Jerome Adams, a U.S. surgeon, said on Sunday that health leaders should appreciate their weight.

“We have to understand that people are listening,” Adams said to the face of CBS. “When you prove the safety and efficacy of a vaccine again and again, it can lead to unexpected consequences.”
