President Vladimir Putin issued a ruling to the special envoy of U.S. President Donald Trump, awarding senior officials who fought against Russia in Ukraine.
Sources familiar with the matter told CBS, a U.S. partner of the BBC, that Putin handed Lenin’s order to Steve Witkoff on a trip to Moscow this week to discuss plans to end the Ukrainian war.
Michael Gloss, 21, was killed in Ukraine last year and is the son of Juliane Gallina, deputy director of digital innovation at the CIA.
Reports of the award emerged as it has been confirmed that Trump and Putin will meet in Alaska next Friday to discuss the future of the Ukrainian war.
Neither the Kremlin nor the Russian Foreign Ministry publicly recognized it, and gave the Leining Order of the Soviet era, an award from the Soviet era to recognize outstanding civilian services.
It is not clear what the award does. The White House, the CIA and Witkov did not respond to requests for comment.
Gloss’ death first appeared in Russian media reports in April.
Later that month, a CIA statement said Gloss had been suffering from mental health problems, adding that his death was not a national security issue.
People familiar with the matter told CBS that Gloss was never a CIA employee.
Sources also told CBS that the Kremlin initially seemed unaware of Glos’ family background, who enlisted with Russian troops in the fall of 2023.
Last year, Gloss shared a selfie on social media on Moscow’s Red Square. His posts expressed support for Russia in what he called the “Ukrainian proxy war” and rejected media reports of the conflict as “Western propaganda.”
Gloss’s itu sue, published in November 2024, stated that he was killed in Eastern Europe on April 4 of that year.
The CIA’s claim about his death four months ago said Ms. Galina and her family suffered “an unimaginable personal tragedy.”
Gloss’ father, Iraq War veteran Larry Gloss, told The Post in an interview in April that their son had struggled with mental illness all his life.
“Our biggest fear is that there are people there when we wait for him to return [in Moscow] Put two and two together, figure out who his mother is, and use him as a prop. ” said Larry Gloss.
