After the season started with an unbeaten ITF Tour with a 22-shot unbeaten ITF Tour, Mboko has shown over the past two weeks that she can mix it with the elites – beating Grand Slam champions Coco Gauff, Sofia Kenin, Elena Rybakakina and Osaka.
This is a test of hard work that started at the age of three, and for a very different parent in the United States in 1999, it was a solace in the political turmoil of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
But this is in Toronto, where Mboko was born in Charlotte, USA – inspired to play tennis.
“I remember going there when I was a kid and watching all the great players play.”
“We look at a lot of Serena and Venus [Williams]That’s where I drew a lot of inspiration because Serena is actually the greatest ever. I’ve seen professionals and I’ve been so awe of them. Now, I see them like I am next to me. ”
Mboko’s coach Nathalie Tauziat is the former third in the world, finalist at the Wimbledon final in 1998 – an outstanding performance after coaching her in the junior ranks.
“I think it’s important for her to see that we don’t panic,” Tauziat said.
“The U.S. Open is the goal – who knows, maybe she can do something good? Here we will play through the game, hoping not to hurt.”
