The Chincotegue Mustangs swam annually on the 100th Virginia Assateague channel.
This tradition began in 1925, when the pony of the “Salt Cowboy” was seen on horseback, which then swam the way and landed on the east side of Chincotigue Island.
The Chincotigue Fire Department, which manages the pony, hosts events including auctions of some foals.
The funds raised help control the size of the cattle herd to help maintain a healthy pony population on the Assateague where the ponies live most of the year.
