In the early hours of Saturday, a team of police officials reached the area to take Naidu in custody. Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu was arrested by the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Saturday early in the morning over allegations of corruption.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief alleged that the sleuths arrested him without any proper information and that they refused to show him evidence.

“I did not commit any malpractice or corruption. CID arrested me without any proper information and I asked them to show the evidence but they refused to show and attached my name to  the FIR without my role,” Naidu was quoted as saying by news agency ANI before he was taken in custody in Nandyal district.

According to an official, the TDP leader was arrested by the Andhra Pradesh Criminal Investigation Department (CID) around 6 am from R K Function Hall at Gnanapuram.

Earlier today, he was served an arrest warrant by the CID in connection with the alleged corruption charges, news agency ANI reported.

In the early hours of Saturday, a team of police officials reached the area to take Naidu in custody. However, they could not proceed as a group of TDP workers got into an argument with the policemen questioning the late-night action.

Leaders of the party condemned the late-night police action against the senior leader. Some of the party workers have also been detained by the police,  ANI reported.

As per the TDP leader’s counsel, they will approach the High Court as well for Naidu’s bail. “CID has taken Chandrababu for a medical check-up after high blood pressure and diabetes were detected. We are approaching the High Court for bail,” Naidu’s counsel was quoted as saying by ANI.

The former chief minister has been arrested under relevant IPC sections, including Sections 120B (criminal conspiracy), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 465 (forgery), according to a notice served to Naidu. The Andhra Pradesh CID has also invoked the Prevention of Corruption Act against him.

In the notice, the Deputy Superintendent of Police of the CID’s Economic Offences Wing (EOW), M Dhanunjayudu, said, “It is to inform you that you have been arrested… at 6 am at R K Function Hall, Gnanapuram, H/o Moolasagaram, Nandyala town and it is a non-bailable offence.”
