Parineeti Chopra has opened up about losing work because she doesn’t “belong to a camp” and doesn’t have “people making calls” on her behalf.

Actor Parineeti Chopra recentlyopened up about losing work because of a “lack of access” and “miscommunication”. Parineeti said that now, after receiving critical praise for her performance in Imtiaz Ali’s Amar singh Chamkila in which she plays the slain singer Amarjot Kaur, she is hopeful that the “decision-makers” in the industry will recognise her talent and offer her work.

In an interview with Pinkvilla, Parineeti said that she wants “equal opportunity”. When asked if she feels there is a lack of it, she agreed, and explained her statement. She said, “I think so. I want opportunities from all the decision-makers out there. The big producers, the big studio heads, the big directors. If our talent speaks to them, if our hard work speaks to them, just give us that opportunity. Because till we don’t get that opportunity, we can’t prove ourselves. If I didn’t have a Chamkila today, I would have never known, or the world would have never known that I can sing live, and I can put on weight, and I can act well and that is still the same old me.”

Parineeti was launched by Yash Raj Films in 2011 with the romantic comedy Ladies vs Ricky Bahl along with Ranveer Singh. Parineeti then went on to do three more films under the banner — Ishaqzaade (2012), Shuddh Desi Romance (2013), and Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021). However, she claimed that she has lost out on work because of “lack of access”.

She said, “Sometimes, you don’t get those opportunities for the wrong reasons. I have gone up to directors and they have said, ‘Listen, I have been wanting to work with you for the last three films and I didn’t know if you wanted to work or not’. Some miscommunication, or some lack of access, or something. I just wish that would stop now after Chamkila. I hope that it becomes a meritocracy in its true sense. I hope that if I do good work, I get good work, that’s what I am looking for now. I am not looking for a particular project, a certain wish-list, nothing, just good work.”

Parineeti recently interacted with a fan, who had said on X, “If she had the kind of backing that her contemporaries had, she would have done wonders in the last decade.” Responding to the tweet, Parineeti had written, “Hoping this changes after Chamkila. Want to do lots of good work, waiting for good directors to call me!

When asked if she feels that her contemporaries got a lot more opportunities than her. She responded by saying, “I definitely feel that access to certain actors and an access to certain directors leads to work opportunities. If I am not available in front of their eyes all the time then I will lose out on that work opportunity. This is not a discussion on nepotism and all of that at all. I am just saying there are camps, there are circles, there are favourites. Two people who are similarly talented, who, you know, can bring the same thing to the table, one will be a favourite and one will not. And the one who will not will lose the opportunity.”

She added, “Which is why I hope it becomes a meritocracy. If I am able to bring that talent, if I am able to bring the same amount then I must also get the opportunity and not lose it because I don’t have a relationship with you or I am not in your camp. Which is why I responded to this fan, saying that the fan sees it as I don’t have the backing, I don’t have the person pushing me, I don’t have somebody making calls for me, I don’t have somebody saying, ‘Take Parineeti in this, I’ll do a deal with you,’ I don’t have these things happening for me, I only have my talent. So, the day that changes, I think I’ll be able to do all the work that I dream of doing.”
