Federal judge draws Trump administration lawsuit against Illinois

The Trump administration’s battle with Democratic-controlled jurisdictions and its shelters suffered a blow on Friday Chicago The case challenging its legitimacy was rejected.

Judge Lindsay Jenkins of the Northern Illinois region, Beden-appointed president, approved the defendant’s motion to dismiss, ruling that the city’s statute was not legally protected by federal law enforcement requirements.

Sanctuary city or protection policies limit cooperation between local officials and law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. The Trump administration has long opposed these measures, believing that they make these areas safe havens for criminal illegal immigration and contribute to increased crime.

The Justice Department accused these laws of violating the “Supreme” clause of the U.S. Constitution under the Tenth Amendment, which states and local laws that may conflict with federal laws.

But Jenkins rejected the argument, ruling that countries retained important powers not explicitly granted to the federal government.

“The statutes that found these same policy provisions constitute discrimination or disallowing will provide an end around the Tenth Amendment,” the judge wrote. “This would allow the federal government to command the state under the guise of intergovernmental immunity, a type of direct regulation for countries prohibited by the Tenth Amendment.”

Mayor Johnson warns Trump not to deploy federal forces to immigrate suppression in Chicago

The Chicago City Council passed an ordinance in 2012 that prevents city agencies and employees from participating in civil immigration enforcement or helps federal authorities to pass such efforts. The Illinois Legislature passed similar state laws in 2017, called the Trust Act.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said he was happy with the decision and the city was safer when police focused on the needs of Chicagoans.

“This ruling affirms what we already know: Chicago’s welcome city regulations are legal and support public safety. They must not be forced to cooperate with the Trump administration’s reckless and inhuman immigration agenda.”

The Trump administration has sued several jurisdictions regarding its asylum policy, including documents targeting New York City this week. The government also sued several New Jersey cities and Los Angeles.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the federal government has no choice but to protect New Yorker By filing a lawsuit.

“If New York leaders don’t step up their protection of their citizens, we will,” she wrote on X.
