The Department of Defense has ordered 700 U.S. Marines to leave Los Angeles, California on Monday, more than a month after they deployed to the city against the will of city leaders and violent demonstrations against us Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Action.
The Trump administration deployed 700 Marine Corps and about 4,000 National Guard soldiers to Los Angeles in early June to quell anti-immigration and customs enforcement (ICE) riots and protests.
The Marines assigned to the area were limited to defending federal buildings, including ice roads and detention centers in downtown Los Angeles.

“As the stability returned to LA, the secretary directed the redeployment of 700 Marines, whose presence sent them a clear message: intolerable,” said Sean Parnell, Pentagon chief spokesman. “Their quick response, unwavering discipline and clear presence played a role in restoring order and maintaining the rule of law. We are very grateful for their service, and the strength and professionalism they brought to this mission.”
The Pentagon’s decision to let the Marines leave Los Angeles comes after ordering half of the National Guard to leave the city last week.

“This is another win for Los Angeles, but it is also a win for those countries that are in uniform,” Bass said Monday. “Just this morning, I stood with veterans, families and business leaders of active duty officials, showing the impact of this unnecessary, unprecedented and unconstitutional attack. We brought the administration to court and now win, and now we continue to maintain that momentum with today’s news. Los Angeles stands with our troops and we are very happy to leave.”
California State Government Gavin Newsom Despite his objections, the Trump administration has been sued for deploying the California National Guard. He argued National Guard Forces may have violated the POSSE COMITATUS Act, which prohibits forces from enforcing the law on U.S. land.

Newsom won an early victory in the case after a federal judge ruled that the Guard deployment was illegal and exceeded Trump’s authority. The Court of Appeal abandoned the order and control of the troops remained in the federal government. The federal court will hear arguments about whether the troops violate the POSSE COMITATUS Act next month.

The deployment of the National Guard troops lasted for 60 days, but Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth Trump administration lawyers wrote in a June 23 legal case that if shortening or extension is “shortening or expanding” to “flexibly respond to reality.”
