A federal judge sentenced to a former Kentucky police officer on Monday for nearly three years in prison for using excessive force during a fatal period in 2020 Breonna Taylor The raid, refusing the Justice Department’s advice, he was not sentenced to jail.
Brett Hankison fired 10 shots in the raid but failed to hit anyone, the only officer charged in the death of a black woman. He was the first person to be sentenced to jail because he shocked the city of Louisville five years ago and spawned weeks of street protests.
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings sentenced Hankison at a hearing Monday afternoon. She said it was “inappropriate” to have no imprisonment time and said she was “shocked” and that no more people were injured in the raid.
