Marine General Nominated as the First Non-Navy Dean of the Naval Academy

In a landmark nomination that reshapes nearly two centuries of tradition, Marine Corps Lieutenant General Michael J. Borgschulte was hired as the next president of the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

If confirmed by the Senate, he would become the first Marine to hold the highest position in the academy’s 180-year history.

The move was announced on Friday Secretary of Defense Pete Heggs as part of a broader nomination for military leadership. Borgschulte is currently the deputy commander of the Human Resources and Reserves at the Quantico Marine Corps headquarters in Virginia. He was a 1991 Naval Academy graduate.

The nomination was conducted under unexpected leadership. Yvette Davids, the vice president who served as commander of the college last year, was nominated for reappointment and reassignment to the Pentagon. She plans to become deputy vice president of Naval Operations for Action, Program, Strategy and Combat Development (N3/N5/N7), Senate approval and Congressional exemption.

“I am honored to be nominated,” Davis said in a statement. “I look forward to continuing to serve with America’s most powerful fighters.”

Navy Secretary John C. Phelan praised the two officers. He called Borgschulte a “decorative combat leader” and used “strategic insights” as “strategic insights” and praised her “strategic vision” and “operational depth.”

Philean also pointed to the importance of the nomination, calling it a powerful signal of “naval convergence” as the Marine Corps prepares to lead the Navy’s flagship official training agency.

Borgschulte was commissioned in 1991 after graduating from the Naval Academy and has held multiple command and combat roles throughout his career. In his current position, he oversees personnel policy, preparation and strength structure Marine Corps.

Davids, a 1989 graduate of the Naval Academy, became the first woman and the first Hispanic woman to serve as principal. Her term at the college seemed to end prematurely.

Traditionally, the director expects to be in office for three years and then retire. The Department of Defense (DOD) press release did not provide an explanation for sudden changes, and her next mission would require giving up on Congress. Her next role usually requires a post-retirement transition, but she hasn’t finished it yet.

Davids’ husband, descendant Keith Davids, retired last year as commander of the Navy’s Special War. The couple met many people at the academy.
