At least three officers were killed in the explosion at a county sheriff’s department training facility in East Los Angeles, officials said.
According to the first responders, the explosion occurred Friday morning at Biscailuz Center Academy training at 07:30 local time (BST 15:30).
U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi confirmed the death in an article on X, calling it a “terrible incident” and said federal agents have been deployed on the spot and are “working to learn more.”
It is not clear what caused the explosion or other victims.
The Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) told the BBC’s U.S. partner CBS News that the explosion occurred in the parking lot of the special law enforcement bureau of the facility.
In a statement on X, his office said California Gov. Gavin Newsom has briefed the explosion and is “closely monitoring the situation.”
Newsom’s office added that state aid was also provided to help with the incident.
Department of Homeland Security, as well as alcohol, tobacco, guns and explosives officials, as well as members of the Los Angeles Police Department, are helping in the investigation.
Kathryn Barger, the head of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, wrote in a statement that she is “stalking closely because we learn more about what is happening and what is affected.”
“My heart is heavy and my mind is with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time,” she said.
