President Donald Trump said Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar in beverages sold in the United States.
Coca-Cola uses corn syrup in its U.S. products, but Trump’s health secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr expressed concern about the health effects of the ingredient.
“I have been talking to Coca-Cola about using real cane sugar in Coke in the United States, and they agreed to do so,” Trump wrote in the Truth Society Post. “I want to thank all the authoritative people in Coca-Cola.
A Coca-Cola spokesman said they were “thank you President Trump for his enthusiasm” and “more details about new and innovative products within our Coca-Cola product range.”
“It will be a good move for them – you’ll see. It’ll be better,” Trump said.
Although cola sold in the United States usually uses corn syrup, cola in other countries, such as Mexico and the United Kingdom, tends to use cane sugar.
In April, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey told investors that “we continue to make progress in reducing beverages.”
Mr Quincy said the company “does this by changing recipes and using our global marketing resources and distribution network to increase awareness and interest in our expanding portfolio.”
Kennedy and his campaign to make America healthy again advocate that American companies remove ingredients such as corn syrup, seed oil and artificial dyes from their products, linking them to a range of health issues.
He is critical of American consumption and he reportedly plans to update the national dietary guidelines this summer.
Trump is a regular drinker for Diet Coke – using the artificial sweetener aspartame. He installed a button on the decisive table in the Oval Office so that he could give the soda water with soda.
