Health officials say Arizona residents died of pneumoplague.

Health officials confirmed Friday that an Arizona resident died from a pneumonia plague.

This is the first death from the county’s disease since 2007, according to Coconino County Health and Humy Services. In this case, a person interacts with the dead animals infected with the disease.

The plague, known as the “black death” of the 14th century, killed half of Europe’s population. It is rare in humans now and can be treated with antibiotics.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that in the United States, there are an average of 7 plague cases per year.

The risk of exposure to the public remains low, the Coconi County government said.

“Our hearts pay tribute to the families of the deceased and the friends of the deceased,” Patrice Horstman, chairman of the Supervisory Committee of Coconino County, said in a statement. “We keep them in our minds during this difficult time. Out of respect for the family, no additional information about death will be released.”

Preventive measures include the use of DEET-based repellents to prevent flea bites, avoid contact with dead animals, infected tissue or material, and avoid close contact with symptomatic patients and crowded areas of recently reported cases.
