Elon Musk said he is launching a new party a few weeks after a violent collapse with U.S. President Donald Trump.

The billionaire announced on his social media platform X that he has formed the American Party, viewing it as a challenge to the Republican and Democratic two-party system.

However, it is not clear whether the party has officially registered with the U.S. election authorities. Musk was born outside the United States and was therefore not eligible to run for the presidency of the United States, and he did not say who would lead it.

He first raised the prospect of holding a partisan during a public dispute with Trump, which left him with a role in the administration and had a vicious public quarrel with his former allies.

During that row, Musk posted a poll on X asking users if they should have a new party in the United States.

Musk mentioned the poll in his post on Saturday: “In a 2-to-1 ratio, you want a new party and you will have it!

“When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste and grafting, we live in a one-party system, not a democratic system.

“Today, the American Party was established to keep you free.”

As of Saturday, the Federal Election Commission has not released documents indicating that the party is officially registered.

Although in American politics, high-profile players outside the traditional bipartisan system, it is difficult for them to gain strong enough visibility across the country to pose a real threat.

In last year’s presidential election, candidates from the Liberal Party, Green Party and BJP all Try in vain To stop Trump or his democratic rival Kamala Harris from winning.

Until recently, Musk has been a core supporter of Trump, dancing with him at an election rally last year and meeting his four-year-old son in the Oval Office.

He is also a major financial supporter of Trump: Musk spent $250 million (£187 million) to help him regain his office.

After the election, he was appointed to lead the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is tasked with determining cuts in the federal budget.

His influence on Trump began when he left the administration in May and publicly criticized Trump’s tax and spending plans.

The legislation Trump calls “the big and beautiful bill” was nearly passed by Congress and signed into law this week by the president.

Large-scale laws include huge spending commitments and tax cuts, and the U.S. deficit is estimated to increase by 3ttn over the next decade.

It is crucial for Musk, who owns electric car giant Tesla, that Trump’s bill does not focus on green transitions or subsidies for products like Tesla.

“Elon may have received more subsidies than anyone in history,” Trump wrote this week on his social media site Real Social. “Without subsidies, Elon may have to close stores and return to South Africa.”

Trump threatened to get Doge to investigate supporting Musk’s subsidies and hinted at other billionaires’ businesses.

Musk also owns SpaceX, which launched rockets for the U.S. government, and Starlink provides satellite services to the U.S. and European Defense Forces.
