How safe is Charlie Kirk shooting?

Conservative firepower Charlie Kirk was shot dead in seconds during a speech event on Utah’s university campus, and the video showed security guards around the stage and took action to protect him.

In those busy seconds, it is not clear where the shot comes from or whether the Gunners will shoot. Video showed those security officers kept their guns low on the ground, putting their guns on the side in more fires and quickly leaning towards Kirk’s wounds.

Kirk was taken to the hospital and died of injuries.

But the attacks have caused many to question what security measures were taken at the event – whether such measures can be avoided.

About 3,000 people gathered Wednesday to hear Kirk’s speech at Utah Valley University (UVU) for his open-air university debate series.

The Utah Valley University police chief said the crowd was scattered.

The event occurs in the University Quadrilateral – a quadrilateral often used for activity – which is located between multiple buildings. Police said the suspect shot Kirk from the roof of one of the buildings.

It is not clear how many people are Kirk’s private security, but videos shared online show five to seven security guards on the stage.

The FBI did not confirm whether Kirk was wearing a bullet professor vest when he was shot, nor did Kirk’s organization turn around the United States.

But investigators said he was shot dead in his neck – an area that is usually not protected by a vest.

He previously said Kirk was a well-known figure with millions of social media followers – who had faced death threats in the past.

University of Nebraska professor Tin Nguyen told the BBC while studying security practices at a large event that he conducted threat assessments on his security team and campus police should take into account the threat to him.

He said the number of local police officers may be at least partly determined by the history of the area.

“Orem in Utah is a safe low-crime zone – as security and law enforcement may think this is really unlikely to happen,” Mr Nguyen said. “Historical information doesn’t always allow you to prevent events that have never happened.”

Experts told the BBC that the scale and nature of the incident also affect security measures by having difficulty controlling access.

Protocols such as conventional parts of indoor events, such as bag checking and magnetometers, are not usually used outdoor functions.

Christopher Ragone, who runs the administrative security concept of American security companies, told the BBC that other security mechanisms such as drones could be important devices for this situation.

The BBC was unable to verify whether the drones were present in Kirk’s event. Experts also said it is unlikely to be present.

Mr Ragone said a drone could have provided a vantage point that could see the roof surrounding the open air activity.

He said that since there is no standard of safety activity for personality like Kirk, it depends on the individual and their budget.

Mr. Ragone was scheduled to bring a speaker to another Kirk event at Virginia Tech, which was also part of his college campus tour.

During that event, Mr. Ragon planned to coordinate closely with the University Police Department. He said they worked under lockdown because the university had to do something like allowing private security personnel to carry weapons on the ground.

He noted that private security depends on the local resources available in the area, but speaking in outdoor places in Utah makes private security work even harder.

As protocols get fewer, suspects can get in more easily: “You really only need a gun and a clear line of sight,” Mr Nguyen said.
