Jason Collins is the first openly gay player in the NBA, receiving treatment for brain tumors | NBA

Collins is a 7-foot center with eight games in eight seasons in the New Jersey/Brooklyn Nets game, and has also spent some time with the Atlanta Hawks, the Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies, the Minnesota Forest Walls and the Washington Wizards.

Collins averaged 3.6 points and 3.7 rebounds in 735 games in 2001-14. The Houston Rockets selected his 18th place in 2001 by the Houston Rockets after starring at Stanford with his twin brother Jarron. He retired from the NBA 2014.

Collins appeared in court in a 2013 article in Sports Illustrated. He is the first active male athlete in one of the four major professional sports leagues in North America.

“I’m not going to be the first openly gay athlete to play in a large team sport in the United States,” Collins wrote in the Sports Illustrated article. “But because I’m the one I’m happy to start the conversation. I hope I’m not the kid in the classroom raises my hand and says, ‘I’m different.’ If I have my own way, others have done that, that’s why I raise my hand.”

The 46-year-old has been serving as an ambassador in the NBA since he retired from the game. He married his longtime partner Brunson Green earlier this year.
