Conservative political commentator Charlie Kirk He was shot dead while giving a speech at an event at the University of Utah in Orem, Utah.
Kirk is currently in a “critical situation” after being taken to a local hospital. A law enforcement official told Associated Press.
Kirk, 31, was attending a Q&A with students when he was shot dead in his neck on Wednesday, September 10, on Wednesday, September 10.
“A guest spokesperson was fired on campus. Police are investigating and the suspect is in custody,” the university’s campus alert said.
However, the alert proved incorrect.
“The suspect was not detained,” Utah Valley University spokesman Scott Trotter said in a follow-up statement. “Police are still investigating. The campus is closed for the rest of the day.”
Wednesday’s event was organized by USA’s Turning Point, which Kirk co-founded in 2012.
“It’s a constant situation. We can confirm that Charlie Kirk has been shot. He is in the hospital and we are currently praying for him.” Aubrey Laitschthe U.S. public relations manager at the turning point said in a statement.
Kirk’s identity is not yet known.
According to CNN, the shooting was fired from a campus building about 200 yards from Kirk’s speech.

Former U.S. representative Jason ChaffetzRepublicans representing Utah from 2009 to 2017 were witnesses to the shooting.
Chaffetz, 58, told Fox News in a telephone interview shortly after the shooting. “You know, he came out, he threw his hat and stirred the crowd.”
Chafitz said Kirk first answered a “religious question” and was asked about “transgender shootings” and “mass killings.”
“When this happened, when the issue came out, he knew that he was going to interact, a shot,” Chafitz recalls. “I looked at Charlie. I couldn’t say I saw the blood. I couldn’t say I saw him hit, but I did see him immediately falling backwards to his left.”
Chafez added: “A shot was big, everyone hit the deck and everyone started spreading, yelling, screaming.
