Mayor sues Trump for efforts to limit Obamacare’s signature reform | U.S. healthcare

New Trump administration Rules that have allowed millions to shorten their timetables to sign the Affordable Care Act health care scope are facing legal challenges from the nation’s Democratic mayors.

The rule was introduced last month, reversed Biden-era efforts to expand access to health insurance under the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare or ACA. The former Democratic government expanded the enrollment window for coverage, resulting in record enrollment rates.

Late last month, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) introduced a series of new restrictions on Obamacare, just as Congress weighed a major bill that would reduce enrollment in health care programs that Donald Trump despised for years. As many as 2 million people (nearly 10%) are expected to lose coverage due to new regulations in the health sector.

The mayors of Baltimore, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio sued the federal health department Tuesday, saying they would lead to more uninsured residents and services in load-loaded cities.

“The 2025 rules, masquerading as government efficiency and fraud prevention, create many obstacles to affordable insurance coverage, negating the ACA’s purpose to extend affordable health coverage to all Americans, while increasing the population of underinsured and uninsured Americans,” the document said.

Two liberal advocacy groups – Doctors of the United States and the Main Street Alliance – joined the complaint.

The federal health department announced a series of changes late last month. It will shorten the federal market’s enrollment by one month, limiting it to November 1 to December 15, 2026. Income verification checks will become more stringent and pay $5 for some people who automatically re-enroll in the free plan.

Insurers will also be able to reject coverage for those who have not paid their past plan premiums. The rules also prohibit about 100,000 immigrants brought to the United States from signing reports.

HHS spokesman Andrew Nixon said in a statement that the new rules “protect the future of the market” and would reduce premiums for those who retain the plan.

“The rule fills in loopholes, enhances supervision and ensures that taxpayer subsidies go to those who really qualify – it’s not controversial, it’s common sense,” Nixon said.

But the three mayors believe that the policy was introduced during a period when there was no sufficient public opinion.

“This illegal rule will force families to get rid of health insurance and increase the cost of millions of Americans. It will not help, but harm the health and safety of Americans.” Democratic Forward President Skye Perryman said on behalf of the plaintiffs’ alliance in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit does not challenge the Trump administration’s restrictions on immigration signed reports.

The Biden administration believes that Obamacare enrollment is a major success for the Democratic presidential term, noting that a record 24 million people signed coverage due to the generous tax breaks provided by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.

But the plan has been a target for Trump, who said it is full of problems that keeps many people without large subsidies from being able to afford coverage. The program’s enrollment rate was immersed in the first semester of his tenure.
