Telecommunicationist Jimmy Swaggarthe became a household name, amassed a huge following and millions of dollars in ministry, but was stripped of the revelation of the paid sex worker, and he was dead. He is 90 years old.
Swaggart’s once-millionaire audience has been reduced by decades, and his name becomes a punch on late-night TV. His death was announced on his public Facebook page Tuesday. Despite his poor health, the reason was not immediately given.

“I have sinned against you,” Swagat told parishioners nationwide. “I beg you to forgive me.”
He announced his resignation later that year from God’s Assembly, and shortly afterwards the church said it was because he refused to thaw the punishment ordered by “moral failure.” The church wants him to participate in a two-year rehabilitation program, including a full year of no preaching.
Swagat said at the time that he knew the dismissal was inevitable, but insisted that he had no choice but to separate from the church to save his ministry and Bible Academy.
Swagat’s message aroused thousands of grocers and millions of TV viewers, making him a household name in the late 1980s. Contributors built the Jimmy Swaggart division in a business that estimated to make $142 million in 1986.
His Baton Rouge Louisiana complex still includes a worship center as well as broadcast and recording facilities.
Swagat publicly stated that his income was subjected to a sex scandal surrounding rival telecom Jim Bakker and a former church secretary organized by Bakker’s PTL ministry in 1987.
