U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that cost-cutting agency Elon Musk helped set up a company that Doge could use to hurt billionaires — as former allies continue to openly controversy over Trump’s budget plan.
“So far, Elon may have received more subsidies than anyone in history,” he wrote on social media. “Maybe we should have Doge pay a good thing, hard to see?
“I’m actually talking about all cuts. Now,” the tech billionaire wrote in his answer.
Musk has repeatedly criticized Trump’s so-called “big and beautiful bill”, which shows that it undermines the work he has done to reduce government spending.
A line between Trump and Musk, which was blown up for the first time last month, was openly traded barbs before Musk traced back some of his attacks.
Congress is currently voting on Trump’s bill. The president’s Republican Party has a majority in both chambers, although some members of the party voted against it – getting along with opposition Democrats.
The proposed legislation includes increased spending on border security, defense and energy production, which will be partially offset by the controversial health care and food support program.
Musk is in charge of Doge (Ministry of Government Efficiency), a department tasked with finding ways to reduce government spending until his fierce White House leaves the “big and beautiful bill.”
Trump suggests that the objections of Tesla and SpaceX owners are related to a portion of his bill that would eliminate incentives to buy electric cars, such as those produced by Musk.
The president also threatened to remove government subsidies that Musk would benefit.
“He was upset about losing the task of electric cars, he was very upset, he could lose a lot, I can tell you,” Trump told reporters Tuesday morning.
He added: “Dorgi is a monster who might have to go back and eat Elon. He got a lot of subsidies.”
However, Musk believes he is ideologically committed to cutting government spending. If passed, Trump’s bill would add about 3.3tn (2.4tn) of fees to national debt.
While voting, in a series of posts on his social media platform X, Musk shared a chart that over time the title showed our debt: “When will they level this curve?”
“Every member of Congress runs for a reduction in government spending and then immediately vote for the biggest debt increase in history, should be ashamed!” he wrote in another article.
Musk said he will ensure that the members lose their main competition next year. The billionaire businessman — who spent hundreds of millions of dollars to help Trump’s re-election bid last year — even touted the idea, creating a new party to compete with Republicans and Democrats.
In an obvious response to Trump’s claims on EV incentives, Musk reposted a clip from the interview, saying that removing them would see Tesla’s “competitive status will significantly improve.”
