Earlier this week, the body of a hiker from Arizona was found on a trail near the glacier and disappeared after a researcher from Italy was trapped in a stream of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska.

According to the state Public Safety Department, Alaska Wildlife Soldiers received a report Tuesday that a man disappeared in a stream on a glacier and was pushed into a small vertical axis on the ice known as Maurin. The man whose name was not immediately released, was with two others when he fell. Department spokesman Tess Williams said in an email Wednesday that he was conducting research on the glaciers.

The Department of Public Safety said a local ice rescue team responded but found a wide hole about 2 feet (0.6 meters) filled with rapids of water and determined that efforts were finding the person too dangerous.

Glacier – part of the vast Juneau Icefield – is a popular destination for residents and cruise passengers, although many visitors can see it all over Mendenhall Lake, a more developed area of Mendenhall Glacier Entertainment District, which includes the Visitor Center. The glacier is about 13 miles from downtown Juno.

Similarly, this week, searchers using cell phone location data found the body of Thomas Casey, 69, on a trail near the glacier. Casey was last seen on Saturday morning and is believed to have died from injuries in the fall. Juno police have said Casey is in the city in the summer.

In July, a Kentucky woman in Kentucky was found dead on a hill near downtown after she failed to return from a hike.
