On the same day President Donald Trump signed an executive order, an American veteran was photographed burning the American flag outside the White House, demanding new consequences.
Trump signed the order on Monday directing Attorney General Pam Bondi to sue laws involving flag blasphemy and file a lawsuit to clarify the scope of the First Amendment related to flag blasphemy. The order also directs Bundy to refer a sign blasphemy case against state and local laws to appropriate local authorities.
On the same day, videos from outside the White House showed a man using a megaphone to determine that he was a veteran while burning the national flag.
“I’m a 20-year veteran of the U.S. military,” the man said as the flag burned under his feet. “Whatever the president says, this is our First Amendment right.”

At one point in the video, another approaches the veteran, but it is not clear what he said.
The veteran’s reaction repeatedly told him to “stay away from me.”

However, Trump encountered a right-hand push on social media after signing the order, with conservatives largely defending flag burning as First Amendment rights.
“I will never hurt the American flag. But the president told me I can’t get me as close to me as I’m going to catch fire. I’m a free American citizen. If I feel like I want to burn one, I will, I will. That’s the rubbish.
“The flag burning is bad, but the government has no authority to control words or expressions,” wrote radio host Dana Loesch.

The Supreme Court ruled in the 1989 Texas v. Johnson that burning the U.S. flag was a form of symbolic speech protected by the First Amendment. Trump’s executive order directs the attorney general to “put a lawsuit to clarify the scope of the flag burning.”
