Daniil Medvedev was fined $42,500 at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, more than a third of his $110,000 singles prize this year – Because of his collapse A photographer strolls onto the court at the match point.
Tournament referee Jake Garner docked Medvedev for $30,000 as a sign of non-sports behavior, with an additional $12,500 spent on racket abuse. When Sunday’s first round ended with Medvedev’s defeat, he repeatedly hit a racket in the chair, destroying the equipment.
Medvedev was the 2021 U.S. Open champion and was angry when referee Greg Allensworth chaired the opponent Benjamin Bonzi.
Bonzi was at the match point and led 5-4 in the third set, when the photographer (later revoked) walked along the court after the fault.
Allensworth told the photographer to leave the court and then announced that Bonzi would get his first serve again due to the delay. Medvedev approached officials and complained that things quickly got out of control. The crowd began booing, shouting, “Second serving!” Medvedev angered the fans and insulted Allensworth, and the game was lifted for more than six minutes.
“Are you a man? Why are you trembling? He wants to go home, he doesn’t like it here. He’s paid by the game, not by the hour,” Medvedev shouted.
After the order was resumed, Medvedev also included it in the fourth group. But Bonzi ended up winning 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 6-4.
This is Medvedev’s third straight Grand Slam loss in the first round, including last month’s match against Bonzi at Wimbledon.
