The Trump administration announced a proposed rule on Wednesday to limit the length of time international students can study in the United States to four years.
If finalized, the proposed rules are scheduled to be released on Thursday that will limit the time for certain visa holders, including foreign students. “In the past, past governments allowed foreign students and other visa holders to stay in the United States almost indefinitely, posing a security risk, losing unworthy taxpayer dollars and detrimental to U.S. citizens,” a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said in a statement.
The spokesman continued: “This newly proposed rule will end once and for all abuse, limiting the time for certain visa holders to stay in the United States, thereby reducing the burden on the federal government to properly monitor foreign students and their history.”

The proposed rules will allow foreign students and exchange visitors to stay in the country until the program they participate in lasts, although the federal government does not allow it for more than four years, which is usually less time than any other education from a bachelor’s degree.

In addition to students, the proposed rule will set the initial enrollment period for foreign journalists within 240 days, although they may extend up to 240 days, but not exceed the length of their mission.
The press release said that requiring regular assessments of the DHS to keep foreigners in the U.S. for longer periods, will allow the agency to perform “proper oversight” and reduce the number of visas.
