The first major heat wave of summer is intensifying throughout the eastern half of North America, triggering health alerts and destroying millions of daily life.

The heat warnings went into effect from the Midwest U.S. to the East Coast and parts of Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia in Canada, affecting more than 160 million people in a week.

Experts warn that soaring temperatures may exacerbate the risk of heat-related diseases, especially due to high humidity.

The extended duration of the event is a dangerous aggravation, with few nightly relief – some eastern cities may maintain temperatures above 80F (27C) overnight.

The summer officially begins less than a week and the heat wave arrives. Forecasters say several places may encounter record highs.

The Mid-Atlantic region is expected to face the worst conditions by Thursday, followed by Ohio Valley through Friday. In these areas, stressing calories over several consecutive days can greatly increase health risks.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warns people to “take action when you see symptoms of exhaustion of calories and stroke.”

It is recommended that people stay away from the sun during the hottest time of the day, drink plenty of water, and check for elderly people and vulnerable people with health conditions.

Although extreme heat spells affect many parts of North America each summer, this heat wave may exceed the June record.

In New York, Tuesday’s high could hit 101F (38C), which would equal the city’s highest ever June temperature, dating back to 1966.

East Coast energy companies have called on customers to save electricity as millions of air-conditioning units improve air conditioning due to fears of power outages.
