Local Florida elections are a competition between siblings

On Tuesday, a sibling took the competition in the same class to the next level – especially local election levels.

Randolph Bracy and Lavon Bracy Davis competed with each other to become Democratic nominees for the Florida Senate seat.

Their mother takes a place in this sibling competition: Lavon Wright Bracy acts as campaign manager for her daughter, according to her Instagram profile.

There are four players in Orlando’s primary, and the winner is expected to win the general election in September. Geraldine Thompson, a civil rights activist, held the seat for two decades until she died earlier this year.

The siblings’ mother, Ms. Bracy, was the maid of honor at Thompson’s wedding.

The Thompsons also stood with Ms. Bracy Davis and recognized her in Tuesday’s game.

Ms. Bracy Davis plays Thompson’s “Justice, Progress and Service” on her campaign website.

Meanwhile, her brother touted his family’s legacy of serving Central Florida for more than 30 years on his website, but he only mentioned his father, not his mother.

Mr. Bracy told the Orlando Sentinel that his sister decided to compete with him as a major competition and was “disappointing and hurtful”.

Ms. Bracy Davis largely avoided discussing the topics about her brother. The BBC has contacted both for comment.

History shows that there may be some complex family dynamics.

When Bracy ran against Thompson in the Democratic primary in 2024, Ms. Bracy Davis recognized family and friends.

Both siblings have a history of serving in the state legislature, and Mr. Bracy holds different seats in the state Senate until he decides to run for the U.S. House in 2022.

One of the most dramatic examples of sibling competing with each other in American politics dates back to 1871, with brothers Willard, Gove and Eli Saulsbury.

Willard will support behind Ellie, the surprising contestant for the Delaware seat for the U.S. Senate seat. Eli then continued to serve in Congress for 18 years.

Canada saw three pairs of siblings in the 2019 local elections, but only one group competed with each other. In this case, the mother did not disclose which person voted.

In addition to the Bracy siblings, there are two other contenders in the Democratic primary in Florida – former U.S. Congressmen Lan Grayson and Coretta Anthony -Smith, who are personal injury lawyers.

The winner of Tuesday’s competition is expected to succeed in the September election against Republican Willie Montague, as the region is a bastion of democracy.

The Associated Press reported that a Republican political agent recently sent Fliers in the Orlando area to mock the siblings’ fun in the competition, and the Associated Press reported: “Brasey yourself.”
