Cook’s exports will allow Trump to leverage alternatives to help him gain more control over Fed policy. So far, he has turned a deaf ear to the demand for lowering interest rates.
The Trump administration pursued several political enemies of the president, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and California Senator Adam Schiff, involving claims of mortgage fraud. Both James and Schiff denied the allegations.
Cook is not a politician, but one of a series of senior Fed policymakers who violated Trump’s ongoing call for downgrade. Appointed by Joe Biden in May 2022, she became the first black woman to sit on the Central Bank board. Her term on the Fed’s board of directors does not end until 2038.
She is a respected economist who serves at Harvard and Stanford, who served on the Economic Advisory Board under Barack Obama.
The administration’s future attack on the Fed was led by Trump-appointed official Bill Pulte, who heads the U.S. federal housing finance agency, who claimed she claimed her primary residence was her primary residence when she received a mortgage in 2021.
“How should she be responsible for the interest rate if the woman allegedly lied to help her interest rate?” Pulte wrote on X, formerly Twitter. He forwarded the case to the Department of Justice for investigation.
Trump caught the claim before Cook responded and wrote on his social network truth social on Wednesday that she “must resign, now!”.
