The government-owned Australia Post said the temporary suspension would affect many customers, including those who want to send packages over the postal network. Any postal service sent to the United States and Puerto Rico on or after August 26th or after Puerto Rico will be accepted until further notice unless they are exempt.
“We are disappointed that we have to take this action, but the temporary partial suspension is to enable us to develop and implement viable solutions for our customers because of the complexity and rapid development of this situation,” said Gary Starr, executive general manager of Parcel, Post and E-Commerce Services, at the Australian Post Office.
“Australia Post continues to work with U.S. and Australian authorities and international postal partners to prioritize the restoration of postal services for the U.S..”
The agency said it is working with third-party providers authorized by U.S. Customs to find solutions that can restore services. Australia Post said those customers will be notified when the system is about to be completed, so they can “be prepared for this solution”.
An Australian government spokesman said the new U.S. tariff rules are “disappointing and will only increase the costs of U.S. households and small businesses.”
“The Albany government will work with Australia Post to limit disruptions for affected customers while adjusting to comply with the new requirements,” they said.

Small Business Shadow Secretary Tim Wilson said it was “very worrying” and urged U.S. ambassador to the United States Kevin Rudd to lobby for the White House and Congress to “make sure that this relationship is classified.”
Other international postal services have taken similar moves. Both Japan and Switzerland suspended shipping to the United States.
Trump called the shipping of tax-free packages a “catastrophic loophole” in his order last month, saying it allowed parcels to “evade tariffs” and “funnel deadly synthetic opioids, as well as other unsafe or below-market products that damage the market for American workers and businesses,” he said.
“The shippers sent illegal fentanyl and other synthetic opioids, precursors and parapherols into the United States to rely on lower safety measures for De Minimis transport, kill Americans, kill Americans, kill Americans, kill Americans, and kill Americans immunity.” “President Trump is delivering on his promise to ‘end’ the big scam’ de Minimis transport kill Americans and hurt American businesses.”
