Postal Services Europe The impact of new import tariffs announced by Donald Trump has suspended the shipping of most parcels.

France’s LA Poste joined other operators on Monday, including Germany’s Deutsche Post, Spain’s Correos, Poste Italiane and Belgian, Swedish and Denmark’s postal services, all of which stopped shipments from most U.S. businesses over the weekend.

Austria’s Österreichische Post and UK’s Royal Post said they will stop accepting packages on Tuesday in order to give enough time to post the packages before arriving in the United States before that, with the booking scheduled to take effect at the end of August, to begin.

The U.S. president signed a repeal of executive order from August 29 last month, with tax exemptions allowing small packages of less than $800 (the preferred option for many European small businesses) to enter the U.S. tax exemption.

A total of 1.36 billion packages were sent last year, according to U.S. Customs, which included $64.6 billion worth of goods, but now such parcels will now face a 15% tariff – the same rate as most other imports from the EU.

The European Post said they will continue to ship letters and parcels sent by individuals containing gifts worth less than 100 euros, but warned that the gifts will be subject to additional checks to prevent services used in commercial goods.

Operators blame the general uncertainty of how new tariffs will be decided for their decisions and the lack of preparation time.

“There are still key questions, especially about who has to pay the tariffs, what other data is needed and how to transfer the data to US customs,” said DHL, the largest logistics company in Europe.

The company said it no longer “accepts or ships parcels and postal items containing goods from commercial customers in the United States.”

La Poste sends an average of 1.6 million parcels to the U.S. every year, 80% of which come from businesses and 20% in individuals, he said the new rules were confirmed only by U.S. authorities on August 15.

French operators said the late announcement made the European Postal Service “very limited preparation. In addition, the documentation related to the rules still needs further clarification,” French operators said.

Posteurop, an association of 51 public postal operators in Europe, said that if no practical solution is found by August 29, all members will likely suspend most of the parcel shipments to the United States.
